Lyric Family Favorites: August 21
Mimì and Rodolfo first realize they’ve fallen in love as they sing the soaring romantic duet "O soave fanciulla" to close the first act of La bohème. Audiences have been falling in love with La bohème for more than a century. Puccini’s beloved opera first came to Lyric in 1954, long after its world premiere in 1896, and has made a deep impact on popular culture. From the torchy 1959 Della Reese pop song “Don’t You Know” based on “Musetta’s Waltz” to the wildly popular musical Rent, even if you’ve never seen La bohème, chances are you’re familiar with some of it.
So this week, enjoy the fabulous Maria Agresta and Michael Fabiano singing the roles of Mimì and Rodolfo as they begin their fateful love affair in this well-known scene. Plus, take a behind-the-scenes look at the making of Lawrence Brownlee & Friends: The Next Chapter, get a peek into the life of Renée Fleming, and check out Lyric’s top picks for opera streaming next week.
