Lyric Music & More: April 6

In collaboration with librettist Anna Deavere Smith, composer Daniel Bernard Roumain brings his distinctive style to The Walkers in Proximity, creating "a rich, captivating and sometimes cinematic score tinged variously with elements of jazz, blues and especially rap” (Chicago Sun-Times). Hear from the composer in this interview and see why he believes the commission “offers hope.”

“Toreador Song”

In this iconic scene from Carmen, we are introduced to the boastful bullfighter, Escamillo (sung here by Ukrainian baritone Andrei Kymach in his Lyric debut). Swaggering around Lillas Pastia's, he catches Carmen's eye, much to the chagrin of her current flame, Don José.
