Lyric Family Favorites: April 24
At a time when the days often blend into one another, does “TGIF” still apply? We think it does! If you feel like you’ve binge-watched every show on your list and you long for the thrill of great opera performance, today we’re sharing an extended excerpt from Mozart’s incomparably beautiful Idomeneo. You’ll hear soprano Janai Brugger as Ilia, the Trojan captive princess. Unaware that her beloved, the Cretan prince Idamante, is nearby, she thinks of him and asks the breezes to carry her love to him. Once you’ve listened to some music, hear from Maestro James Gaffigan about why he loves Mozart, enjoy a delightful serenade from members of the Ryan Opera Center Ensemble, and hear mezzo-soprano Stephanie Blythe in an endearing classic that has us looking ahead. We wish you a pleasant — and safe — weekend!

The next installment in our Ryan Opera Center from Home Series is “Italian Street Song” from Victor Herbert’s operetta Naughty Marietta. This fun ditty is sure to have you singing “zing, boom, ay” right along with soprano Emily Pogorelc, pianist Craig Terry, and the 2019/20 Ryan Opera Center Ensemble and staff.
It’s only a day away!
Stephanie Blythe sings “Tomorrow”
Lyric audiences have enjoyed many performances by acclaimed mezzo-soprano Stephanie Blythe over the years, most recently as Azucena in Il trovatore. She took to Facebook recently with a different kind of song, a happy rendition of “Tomorrow” that reminds us all to keep looking ahead.
After silence, that which comes nearest to expressing the inexpressible is music.
