Lyric Music & More: April 7

April 7, 2020

In these times of social distancing and spending our days at home, we’ve become very familiar with our pets’ daily nap schedules, the neighbors’ strange vacuuming hours in thin-walled apartments, and our coworkers’ coffee mug collections during video meetings. Thankfully, we’ve also gotten to know you better and we’re enjoying our conversations through email and on social media! To show you how we feel, we’ve included a clip of “Getting to Know You” from our 2016 production of The King and I, sung by Kate Baldwin.

You’ll also find a funny video featuring some of our Lyric staff describing opera plots poorly, an interview with veteran stagehand John Clarke, opera commentaries to pair with the Metropolitan Opera’s nightly live streams, and a coloring interlude, for kids and adults!

The fact is we need opera. We especially need it now. It is an enormous, passionate, melodramatic affair that puts the little business of our lives into perspective. The more dire things get these days, the more we look to comfort ourselves with fact, as if we might feel better if we had just a little more information. But CNN is not enough to live on.
