Lyric Music & More: April 7
In these times of social distancing and spending our days at home, we’ve become very familiar with our pets’ daily nap schedules, the neighbors’ strange vacuuming hours in thin-walled apartments, and our coworkers’ coffee mug collections during video meetings. Thankfully, we’ve also gotten to know you better and we’re enjoying our conversations through email and on social media! To show you how we feel, we’ve included a clip of “Getting to Know You” from our 2016 production of The King and I, sung by Kate Baldwin.
You’ll also find a funny video featuring some of our Lyric staff describing opera plots poorly, an interview with veteran stagehand John Clarke, opera commentaries to pair with the Metropolitan Opera’s nightly live streams, and a coloring interlude, for kids and adults!
Opera plots told poorly
"Boy leaves girl...girl goes crazy — without checking any facts"
We asked some of our Lyric staff to tell us the plots of their favorite operas — with amusing results. Can you guess what operas they’re describing in this fun People of Lyric Opera compilation?
Backstage Life with stagehand John Clarke
A typical day is anything but typical!
Stagehand John Clarke inherited his love of Lyric (and his name) from his father: “I'd been coming to work with him since I was a little kid and thought it was the coolest thing.” Learn more about John and the work he does to keep everything running smoothly behind the scenes.
Enhance your opera streaming experience
Lyric Commentaries for Met Opera Streams
Like a gourmet meal and a fine wine, Lyric’s opera commentaries pair perfectly with nightly streaming opportunities. Our friends at The Met are streaming opera favorites, many of which have recently graced the Lyric stage. There’s also a curated broadcast stream coming from Royal Opera House starting this week — the more opera, the merrier!
For the young and young at heart, a coloring page
Just for fun
If you need an amusement while we’re all staying at home, enjoy this coloring sheet of Lyric Music Director Sir Andrew Davis! Put on your favorite opera tunes, grab some colored pencils, and let your inner artist flow!
The fact is we need opera. We especially need it now. It is an enormous, passionate, melodramatic affair that puts the little business of our lives into perspective. The more dire things get these days, the more we look to comfort ourselves with fact, as if we might feel better if we had just a little more information. But CNN is not enough to live on.
