Ultimate checklist for a perfect summer concert

There’s no better way to kick off the 2024/25 Season than with a concert under the stars. Sunday in the Park with Lyric is a free musical showcase on August 25 featuring the Patrick G. and Shirley W. Ryan Opera Center Ensemble and Lyric Opera Orchestra, with a debut appearance from Lyric Unlimited Artist-in-Residence Karen Slack. Performed annually at the Jay Pritzker Pavilion in Millennium Park, the event offers a perfect opportunity to explore the upcoming season, get a first taste of opera, and spend a beautiful evening under the stars with friends and fellow music lovers.

Here are some Sunday in the Park essentials you can bring to get the most out of your concert experience:

Take in the Chicago skyline while you listen to the Ryan Opera Center Ensemble.

  • Your favorite chair. Settle in for the evening in your favorite camp chair or bring a blanket to spread out on the Great Lawn. A waterproof blanket or tarp is key to staying dry and comfortable until the last note. A lightweight blanket can also be helpful for any drops in temperature as the night goes on.

  • Beverages and snacks. Whether you fancy a charcuterie board or chips and dip, snacks are a must. Add your favorite screw-top wine and insulated glasses to a soft-sided cooler or picnic basket for the perfect pairing. If you don’t have time to pack a picnic or are looking for a more substantial meal, there are plenty of casual restaurants (like sweetgreen, Protein Bar & Kitchen, and Raising Cane's) with takeout options nearby.

Bring a blanket, beverages, snacks, and whatever else you may need!

  • Bug spray and sunscreen are immensely helpful items that often get overlooked. The sun doesn’t set until 7:30pm, so if you plan to arrive early to claim your spot, soak up the rays safely with a layer of SPF 30 or higher. As evening sets in, stay comfortable with bug spray on your feet and ankles.

  • Sunglasses or a fun hat. Channel your inner Enrique Mazzola and don some red glasses! Regardless of the forecast, you may want to consider bringing a wide-brimmed hat or umbrella to offer shade on a sunny day or fend off a light rain.

Enjoy some quality time with friends as you soak in the summer sun.

  • Friends and music-lovers! Sunday in the Park is a perfect opportunity for opera newbies and aficionados alike. Introduce your friends to the world of opera and make plans for the cultural season ahead.

  • Your love for Lyric! Find community through music, and enjoy a special summer concert to kick off Lyric’s 2024/25 Season.

Sunday in the Park with Lyric has something for everyone.
