Spanish composer Ruperto Chapí (1851 – 1909) rose from humble beginnings to eminence in a wide variety of musical genres. His output of stage works was huge, including both operas and the uniquely Spanish, frequently comic, operetta-like pieces known as zarzuelas, of which Chapí was a master.

Las hijas del Zebedeo (The Daughters of the Zebedeo) deals with amorous intrigues in and around the "Zebedeo" bar. The rapid-fire articulation of "Carceleras" ("The Prisoners' Song") makes it the great showpiece of the work. It's sung by Luisa, who works in a tailor shop and is the girlfriend of young Arturo (he's the son of Felipe, who owns the "Zebedeo"). She's singing of the many delightful qualities of the man she loves, and how delighted that, although other women desire him, he is all hers. "I die when he looks at me," she declares, "and it turns me to jelly when he sighs."

El compositor español Ruperto Chapí (1851 - 1909) ascendió desde sus humildes comienzos hasta la eminencia en una amplia variedad de géneros musicales. Su producción de obras teatrales fue enorme, incluyendo tanto óperas como las piezas exclusivamente españolas, con frecuencia cómicas, parecidas a operetas conocidas como zarzuelas, de las que Chapí era un maestro.

Las hijas del Zebedeo trata sobre intrigas amorosas en el bar Zebedeo y sus alrededores. La rápida articulación de "Carceleras" la convierte en la gran pieza de la obra. La canta Luisa, quien trabaja en una sastrería y es novia del joven Arturo (es hijo de Felipe, dueño del "Zebedeo"). Canta sobre las muchas y deliciosas cualidades del hombre que ama, y cuán encantada está de que, aunque otras mujeres lo deseen, él sea todo suyo. "Me mata cuando me mira", declara, "y me derrito cuando suspira".
