Introducing the SoundShirt Pilot Program

Lyric Opera of Chicago is proud to be the first opera company in the world to bring audiences who are deaf or hard of hearing a real-time, fully immersive touch sensation of live music. In partnership with the City of Chicago's Mayor's Office for People with Disabilities, and designed and built by London-based CuteCircuit, the SoundShirt experience was refined through extensive testing at Lyric. The SoundShirt is a groundbreaking fusion of fashion and technology. It provides nuanced, physical vibrations of the opera's music and voices through a comfortable jacket that is light and fun to wear.

How it works

The live opera performance is captured with microphones, with engineers mixing the music from each section of the orchestra and the singers. The sound is then transformed into touch data and the signal is wirelessly broadcast to the SoundShirt. Crafted with precision and artistry, the SoundShirt features an array of embedded haptic actuators that translate sound into dynamic vibrations across the wearer's torso. When combined with the projected English titles or sign language interpretation, it’s the most fully experiential way for someone who is deaf or hard of hearing to experience live opera. It is currently available in medium and large, with more sizes on the way.

The SoundShirt reinforces Lyric’s commitment to accessibility and to broadening the impact of its live performances.

The SoundShirt program is made possible by the Patrick G. and Shirley W. Ryan Innovation Initiative and supported in part by a grant from the League of Chicago Theatres and ComEd.

CuteCircuit

The SoundShirt was invented and produced by London-based CuteCircuit, a wearable-technology fashion brand that has designed in collaboration with Converse and Chanel, among others.
