The story of Romeo and Juliet, one of the most influential love stories ever written, is a perfect match for gorgeous, romantic music. Gounod’s operatic adaptation delivers, particularly with four soaring duets sung by the title characters. But what is a good love story without tragedy and loss to intensify the passion? In this scene, Romeo's best friend Mercutio has just been slain by Juliet’s cousin Tybalt, and though he is struck with despair, his aria “O jour de deuil” is full of resolute defiance to see his beloved Juliet once more. Tenor Joseph Calleja’s voice soars above the orchestra and chorus in this moving scene.
