Week of August 24: Lyric Commentaries for opera streaming and more!

Hey opera lovers, we have quite the schedule for you this week. First, we're heading back to Glyndebourne for another all-star opera stream. On Tuesday, we're highlighting a brand-new initiative started by opera director Ella Marchment, and finishing the week strong with productions from the Metropolitan Opera, Opera Australia, Royal Opera House, and Houston Grand Opera. 

Lyric Opera Commentaries discuss the synopses, music, and some historical insights into the creation of the world's most beloved operas, and musical masterpieces you might've never experienced.

Glyndebourne Festival
Purcell: The Fairy Queen

This production from Glyndebourne stars Lucy Crowe, Carolyn Sampson, Ed Lyon, and was directed by Jonathan Kent. The Fairy Queen was conducted by William Christie in 2009. This opera stream will be available through August 29, 2020. 

Tuesday, August 25

#OperaHarmony

Enjoy something different this week with #OperaHarmony. An initiative started by opera director Ella Marchment, #OperaHarmony was created in response to the onset of COVID-19, and has united over 100 opera makers from across the world in creating 20 new digital operas set to the themes of "distance" and "community." 

Each Tuesday in August, Opera Vision will stream five of these operas. Audience members will have the opportunity to vote on their favorite week to week.

The Metropolitan Opera
Verdi: Il trovatore

This production from The Metropolitan Opera stars Anna Netrebko, Dolora Zajick, Yonghoon Lee, Dmitri Hvorostovsky, and Stefan Kocán, and was directed by Sir David McVicar. Il trovatore was conducted by Marco Armiliato on October 3, 2015. This opera stream will be available until 6:30pm on Wednesday, August 26.

This production from the Royal Opera House stars Olga Borodina, Dmitri Hvorostovsky, and Roderick Williams, and was directed by Luc Bondy. Don Carlos was conducted by Bernard Haitink, and premiered on BBC Proms on July 20, 1996. This radio broadcast will be available through September 19, 2020.

This production from The Metropolitan Opera stars Diana Damrau, Juan Diego Flórez, and Quinn Kelsey, and was directed by Michael Mayer. La traviata was conducted by Yannick Nézet-Séguin on December 15, 2018. This opera stream will be available until 6:30pm on Saturday, August 29.
