Lyric 101: Dos and Don'ts

Here’s a short list of do’s and don’ts to make your Lyric Opera experience one to remember...

Do:

  • Come in with an open mind. Immerse yourself in the world created onstage, a world where dragons are real and true love can conquer everything — even death.

  • Bring friends. Be a Lyric ambassador by sharing your love of opera with the ones you love. Who knows, you may just get a permanent opera buddy out of it! We recommend starting with Turandot and easing them into Wagner.

  • Get to the opera house early. In addition to attending the pre-opera talk, getting to Lyric early gives you time to relax and beat the rush. Take your time finding your seat and ordering refreshments at one of our many concession stands (pro tip: pre-order before the show to have your drinks and snacks ready and waiting for you at the start of intermission.). 

  • Learn more online. Find interesting articles, interviews, videos, and more at Lyric Notes and on all of our social media channels.

Don’t:

  • Be afraid to attend alone. While opera makes for a great group outing or romantic date night, it can also be a wonderful way to carve out some “me-time.” Just think — at least two hours without having to check your email or think about dirty dishes in the sink. It’s the perfect weeknight escape.

  • Be late. Operas start on time, every time. That means you may have to wait in the Foyer until a scene change or even intermission. (Pro tip: Rear-tier boxes do not have the same restrictions — allowing patrons to come and go as they please through an attached anteroom.)

  • Be “that guy” everyone hates. Talking during the show, using your phone, or crinkling wrappers is a faux pas in any theater. Whether you’re seeing a live performance or a blockbuster film, it’s best to be mindful of those around you. Intermissions are long and they are the perfect time to check your phone, post a selfie, and chat with your neighbor about the performance.

     

  • Be afraid to step outside your comfort zone. Love Verdi? Try Wagner. Only see comedies? Try a dramatic thriller. You never know what will spark your interest until you give it a try!
